31 August: one month on the road

Window boxes of geraniums and a hand-written wooden sign in Italian on a white and blue wall.

We have been travelling for exactly a month and so far it still feels like a holiday. Partly because today is our last day at the Baia degli Aranci, where we have in fact simply been on holiday. It is a strange feeling not knowing what comes next, but very reassuring not to have to do anything, and above all not to have to drive back to Munich.

The beginning was shaped by the stop in Udine and by preparations that carried on, then the real departure with visits to a few friends — a sort of setting-off-lite, or like the holiday drives of earlier years, with a few stops along the way. We covered a good many kilometres and saw a lot of places already. And then the long overdue holiday at the Baia degli Aranci, to get some rest. All of it was full of good moments, but the real adventure has yet to begin. I am curious to see how it goes on.

Being on the road in the camper, with the freedom to stop and sleep anywhere, we like very much — pinning it down at a campsite, so far, rather less. Whether because of the lack of mobility, as at Pescia Romana, or the smell from the grey water, or simply the campsite lifestyle we have met so far, which has not entirely won us over.

The children have their daily highs and lows, in turn or together, and it is mainly the lows that pull at our energy reserves and our nerves. Enea wants attention at regular intervals too, lately with the AdBlue warning again. All of that, together with everyday life — shopping, cooking, washing up — leaves very little time so far for this blog, for sorting the photographs, for planning the next steps and for philosophising about life. BUT there has been enough time to get back to sport (HIIT), to inspiring audiobooks (Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior) and to acroyoga with Maddalena.
